The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the right to challenge certain calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.
Case in Point
A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
